I am so happy to have Barack Obama represent me and my fellow Americans. This is a country of minorities, and it's about time our politics reflect that. But to be honest his heritage is just a bonus for the history books. When it all came down to it, he was the candidate who fought for the same views I find important.

Editorial: Governor torrent -- Nov. 1, p. 6

I don't mean to be sarcastic -- or maybe I do. Perhaps if another big flood was to hit Jakarta again because of a lack of preventive measures, the governor could sell some of his paintings from his collection which includes Srihadi, Basuki Abdullah, Sudjojono and Hendra Gunawan to help flood victims!

Barito Market -- October Youthspeak *11

In the "Green Warriors" section of The Jakarta Post's YouthSpeak *11, Novia D. Rulistia states, "Barito Market, which was notorious for its sale of exotic and rare species -- often illegally captured -- no longer exists, as the city government evicted vendors in January this year."

Unfortunately, this is not true.

Barito Market is alive and well and traders there sell illegally captured and endangered animals with impunity. Should the city government actually evict such traders from Jalan Barito, they would just move their businesses elsewhere.

The Forestry Ministry needs to arrest and prosecute poachers and sellers if there is to be any progress in stemming this country's illegal trade in wildlife.
