Bali bombers confirmed dead

The three convicts convicted of masterminding the 2002 Bali bombings were executed at 23.20 Jakarta-time, Antara news agency reported early Sunday morning.

Amrozi, Mukhlas a.k.a. Ali Gufron, and Imam Samudra, were reportedly taken from their cells at 23.00 and brought to a location known as the "Nirbaya" hills, located six kilometers from Batu Penitentiary.

Nirbaya, a former prison during the Dutch colonial era, is now used as a place for executing death-row convicts.

According to Antara, Amrozi, Mukhlas and Imam Samudra were executed in the presence of three Central Java Regional Police firing squads.

The procession begun at 23.10 with a sermon by a religious scholar, advising the convicts to accept their fate.

Officials of the Attorney General's Regional Office then read out an execution order, signaling the execution to proceed at 23.20.

The three Bali bombers were subsequently shot and confirmed dead by Central Java Police forensic officers at 23.30.
