A Japanese citizen was arrested last week when Bali Narcotics Police found him in possession of approximately eight grams of marijuana, a spokesperson for the police told tempointeraktif.com on Tuesday.
The 47-year-old TM was reportedly arrested in front of a shop in Sanur after police found him carrying two small packets of marijuana.
"He was wearing blue shorts. The marijuana was in his pocket," spokesperson Sri Harmiti said.
TM, who had been in Bali for 3 days prior to the arrest, allegedly purchased the drugs for Rp 400,000 from an unknown passerby while walking along Sanur beach, Harmiti said.
Due to the offense, the accused faces a penalty of up to 10 years' imprisonment and Rp 500 million fine. (amr)

The practice of setting up foreign tourists regarding drugs purchases is rife in Bali. And yes I agree with KillBill and Mr Austin, those who peddle are rarely caught. I was offered drugs when there in May and of course flatly refused.
There is no excuse for being ignorant of Bali's tough drug laws but I do agree that something needs to be done to stop those who peddle and/or act as 'set-ups.

Welcome to the beautiful beaches of Bali... It was dumb and a stupid thing to do. Being in possession of marijuana, or any illegal drugs in Indonesia is a serious crime. It's the first sign you see when you arrive at the airport.
But in the poor chaps defense... what about the guy selling the marijuana? This practice of peddling anything (women, girls, boys, drugs... they'll sell you anything) to unsuspecting tourist is really sad. Possession is a crime no doubt, but so should the selling of drugs and the setting-up of tourists for a bust.
This unfortunate tourist was obviously setup, and now, for 8 grams of grass he's facing 10 years and a $500,000 fine..!! WOW...
That's why I never stop for hackers on the street or beach in Bali, or elsewhere in Indonesia. Sorry if they think I'm rude, but I ain't gonna get setup by some punk working a scam. A tourist is a target, easy cash...
What can you do??? Just enjoy a cool Bintang (beer's still legal), dig your toes in the sand and enjoy the sunset (it's free)... Tourist beware...!!

"According to Harmiti, TM, who had been in Bali for 3 days prior to the arrest, bought the drugs for RP 400,000 from an unknown passerby while walking along Sanur beach."
Poor TM, he picked to buy from an under-cover police officer or one of their "stoolies" during a rare PR "crack down" to "prove" they (the police) are doing their job [sic]. Funny how Bali's tourist area streets are awash with drug pushers and pimps, yet only one foreigner every two or three months gets arrested YET THE PUSHER NEVER DOES!
