Lawmaker Yusuf Erwin admitted on Tuesday that he had received money from businessman Chandra Antonio Tan to help expedite the conversion of a protected forest into Tanjung Api Api seaport between 2006 and 2007.

He said that he and Commission IV members of the House of Representatives had received a total of Rp 2.5 billion, Rp 500 million of which went into his personal account.

“We accepted the money as we believed that it was from a sponsor, and that it was allowed by party guidelines,” said the former head of the Commission IV on forestry and agriculture at the Corruption Court.

Yusuf, who testified as a witness for defendant Al-Amin Nasution, said that his counterpart had also received money and was responsible to distribute it among commission members from The United Development Party (PPP).

Yusuf and colleagues Sarjan Taher and Al-Amin had been named as suspects in the case. The Court suspected that they have received bribes to facilitate the process of the Tanjung Api Api forest conversion project in South Sumatera. (amr)
