Indonesia's top bowlers will need to win crucial points in the inaugural Ancol International Tenpin Bowling Championship to qualify for the Asian Bowling Federation's Tournament of Champions, to be held in Jakarta next year.
Only Kuwait leg champion Ryan Lalisang, now ranked seventh in the ABF's men standings, and Sharon Limansantoso, now 11th in the women's standings, are in the running for tickets at the Champions.
Tickets will go to the top 16 bowlers in the ABF table after the Ancol event. The Champions showdown will be held in Ancol on Jan. 16-18, 2009.
"Winning the tournament to grab the full 75 points is the safest way to ensure a ticket. I think other (foreign) bowlers will be vying for a slot at the Champions, too," one of Indonesia's women's qualifiers, Putty Insavilla Armein, told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.
The 2006 Asian Games silver medalist attributed the shortfall to the Indonesian Bowling Association's (PBI) failure to send bowlers to international competitions to accrue the necessary points.
"If we sent our bowlers to take part in other ABF legs, we wouldn't be in this position," she said.
Other women competing in the Masters finals on Friday include newly crowned Indonesia Open champ and 2007 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games Women's Masters gold medalist Sharon Limansantoso, 2007 SEA Games Women's Singles gold medalist Tannya Roumimper, Ivana Hanjaya, Ranni A Nugroho, Happy Soediyono, Lily Suhaimi and Shalima Zashsa.
Others playing in the men's division are veteran David Sitorus, Rannga, Michael Bacon, Dennis Ranova, Henky Susanto, Erick Ngo, Kushareyanto, Taufik Rachman, Thomas Tan and Diwan Rezaldy.
Separately, tournament host Jaya Ancol Bowling Center president director Christina Koo urged the PBI to send more Indonesian bowlers to international competitions.
"Bowling is a mental game. Our bowlers, especially the junior players, need more experience in international tournaments to improve their performance," Christina said.
"I hope more Indonesian bowlers will be able to taste the pressure of international tournament when we host the Ancol event."
