TANGERANG: Four companies were caught throwing hazardous waste into rivers, Tangerang environmental management agency reported on Wednesday.
According to the agency's head, Ritanalis, three of the companies did not even have waste treatment facilities, beritajakarta.com reported.
He said that the companies had violated the 1997 Environmental Management Law and they could face sanctions of 10 years in jail and Rp 500 million (US$44,923) in fines.
He added that the agency so far had warned the four companies.
Ritanalis, however, said that it might be difficult to take the cases to court because the agency only had authority to monitor and control environment problems. -- JP
