Semarang agricultural agency culled dozens of birds from a slaughterhouse in Medoho III village, Gayamsari district, on Thursday, following the death of a village teen from the avian flu virus last week.
The villagers decided in a meeting on Wednesday night to cull the birds, Agency head Ayu E. W. Lestari said on Thursday, adding that the agency had taken several blood samples from the birds for further examination.
Separately, Gayamsari district head Fajar Purwoto said the poultry cull was standard procedure following a human bird-flu related death.
"The village area should be cleared of any poultry for at least one month," Fajar said Thursday.
A teenage girl, DS, 15, died last Friday after being treated for a week at a private hospital and another four days at Kariadi General Hospital.
Hospital authorities say blood tests confirmed the girl had contracted bird flu before she died.
DS was the 11th bird flu fatality in Central Java and the 113th in Indonesia to date. (dre)
