Officials, students netted at malls

BEKASI: The Bekasi administration on Thursday netted 52 civil servants and 63 students skipping work and school to spend the day at shopping centers in the regency.

Eighty-five officers from the administration conducted inspections at 20 shopping centers, including Metropolitan Mall, Cibubur Mall, Pondok Gede Mall and Kranji shopping center.

Public order officer Lintong Ambarita said the administration would discipline civil servants who failed to come to work that day.

The civil servants have infringed a 1980 government regulation on employee discipline and could face various castigations, from warning letters to the postponement of promotion, he said.

As for the students, Lintong said, they were taken to the public order office and would be released into their parents' or teachers' custody.

"We hope the measures have a chilling effect on them," said Lintong, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com. -- JP
