JAKARTA: Vice President Jusuf Kalla denied claims by the camp of defeated East Java governor candidate Khofifah Indar Parawansa that the government had intervened in her province's gubernatorial election runoff to ensure victory for her rival Sukarwo.
"The government did nothing to intervene in the election. Why should we do that?" Kalla said at a press briefing at his office Friday.
The defeated camp accused the government of meddling in the election by sending a Cabinet minister to the province days before voting took place.
"If a minister came there, that doesn't mean he meddled," Kalla said.
He said that it was permissible for a minister to participate in an election campaign in favor of a candidate, as long as he had secured permission from the government. -- JP
