Strong earthquakes hit North Sulawesi, one killed

Three successive earthquakes, measuring 7.7, 6 and 5.7 on the Richter scale, hit North Gorontalo regency in North Sulawesi shortly after midnight on Monday, killing one person and injuring dozens others.
According to the regency administration's secretary Yusuf Lasunte, 59-year-old La Aca was killed by falling debris while he was sleeping,

Yusuf said dozens of others were injured by falling debris in Tolinggula district. Yusuf said the regency was still collecting data on injuries and damage.
Thousands of people fled uphill following the earthquakes, which started at 00:02 a.m., for fear of tsunami.
The earthquakes' epicenters were 138 kilometers northwest of Gorontalo at a depth of 10 kilometers below sea level. (dre)
