ICW reports minister to KPK over Bakrie

Indonesian Corruption Watch (ICW) and the Workers Organization Throughout Indonesia (OPSI) on Monday requested the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) investigate State Minister for State Enterprises Sofyan Djalil over his favorable treatment of the Bakries.

The groups raised concerns about possible conflict of interest after Sofyan ordered state companies to form a consortium to buy a 35 percent stake in PT Bumi Resources, the Bakrie family's most valuable company.

"The KPK should prevent state loses from such a plan because Bumi shares continue to fall, and dividends from the state firms that should go into the state budget will instead be wasted on buying the stake," said ICW deputy coordinator Danang Widoyoko.

Northstar Pacific has reportedly teamed up with state mining firms PT Tambang Batubara Bukit Asam, PT Aneka Tambang and PT Timah to purchase the Bumi stake.

"Such a policy will benefit Bakrie because it amounts to a state subsidy for the (Bakrie) group," Danang said.

Sofyan and Coordinating Minister for the People's Welfare Aburizal Bakrie -- the head of the Bakrie family -- were intensively involved in President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's 2004 presidential campaign.

Sofyan has admitted to owning some 1 million Bumi shares, which puts a very bad light on his wanting to salvage Bumi's share price. -- JP/Irawaty Wardany
