Rizal Mallarangeng has put aside his ambition to run in next year's presidential election after acknowledging a slim chance of winning against incumbent Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and former president Megawati Soekarnoputri.
“I have to admit that I will fail. I am not ashamed by admitting my defeat,” Rizal told reporters in Jakarta on Wednesday night as quoted by state news agency Antara.
The younger brother of presidential spokesperson Andi Mallarangeng said that after three months campaigning he realized that he had become more popular, but his chance of getting elected still far below the two national figures.
“My popularity has risen, but my electability yet to increase significantly ... far below Pak SBY and Mbak Mega,” he said.
He argued that the third strongest candidate running in next year's election would be former army general in the New Order era, Wiranto. (and)
