JAKARTA: Information and Communications Minister Muhammad Nuh said his office would carry out an intensive public campaign to help educate people about next year's elections.
"The quality of next year's elections will depend on public participation. We still have six months to go in which to boost public knowledge about the polls," he said here Thursday.
The ministry and the General Elections Commission (KPU) signed a memorandum of understanding to endorse the campaign.
Nuh said his ministry would launch a number of TV and radio ads to raise awareness of the April 9, 2008, elections.
A recent survey by the Indonesian chapter of the International Foundation for the Electoral System found that 80 percent of voters had either little or no knowledge of the new electoral process and that only 12 percent knew about the date of the election. -- JP
