Bengkulu has been rocked by a series of earthquakes, measuring up to 6.7 on the Richter scale, since Saturday night.

The latest tremor, measuring 5.1 the Richter scale, hit Sunday morning at 5:05 on Sunday morning. The quake's epicenter was 165 kilometers southwest of the province offshore, 30 kilometers below sea level.

Earlier, the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency reported that two earthquakes, measuring 6.3 and 6.7 on the Richter scale, hit the province at around midnight Saturday.

The quakes were located in the same area, with the epicenter of the earlier one at a shallower depth.

Bengkulu province is on the southwest coast of Sumatra bordering the Indian Ocean, where underwater quakes frequently occur. In 2004, Aceh, located in the northern part of the island, was hit by a magnitude-9 earthquake that triggered a catastrophic tsunami, killing 131,000 people. (dre)
