Supreme Court rejected an appeal Monday filed by the former regent of Garut, West Java, and sentenced him to serve 10 years in prison due to his misuse of Rp 10.8 billion (US$910,000) in regional public funds between 2002 and 2007.

The Supreme Court also demanded Agus Supriyadi pay a Rp 300 million fine and pay back Rp 10.5 billion. This verdict is more severe than the previous high court verdict which sentenced him
to seven and a half years of jail time. In its verdict, the high court said Agus had embezzled the public funds for his personal benefit.

Supreme Court judge Kresna Harahap said Monday the court would require Agus spend another three years in jail should he fail to pay back all the money.

"Agus has been proven to have violated the 1999 law on corruption," he told tempointeraktif.com. (ewd)
