PADANG, W. Sumatra: The Tsunami Early Warning System (TEWS) siren that was tested in Padang, West Sumatra, on Wednesday failed to succeed in warning people because of its difficulty in being heard over the sounds of the city.

Many people around the Haji Agussalim sports hall, where the siren was installed, said they did not hear the alert as they were engaged in their own activities.

Oktavanianus, 40, a lawyer, said he did not hear the siren as he was driving with the car radio on.

"Maybe I did not hear the siren also because at the time I had the windows closed and the air conditioning on," he added.

A senior official from the West Sumatra administration, Ade Edward, said the TEWS test was conducted jointly by four provinces across the country.

He added that for the project to succeed, the government needed to add TEWS sirens in some regions. -- JP

Living here in Australia we don't take these tsunamia's very seriously,to say that a lot of us are blind to the danger would be an understatement. However, some of us,like myself recognise just how lucky we have been ,considering that our land is bound by sea.All I want to say is that it is up to governments the world over, with their technologies combined to protect the people from tsunami tradgedy.Nothing should be left to go wrong ,alarm systems should be able to be heard, anouncements should made on all media, especially radio braodcasts, and the people should also make it a priority to let their fellow being aware of the circumstances,to help them in any possible way.I know I would. We all have to pull together on this one mate.
