A Malaysian court has granted Yim Pek Ha, an employer convicted with abusing her Indonesian maid, Nirmala Bonat, temporary release from prison on bail pending the decision from a higher court on her appeal.

State news agency Bernama reported Saturday that Pek Ha was out from prison on Friday after her husband, Hii Ik Ting, paid the bail worth 200 ringgit (US$54.55).

The court sentenced Pek Ha on Thursday to 18 years' jail for inflicting horrific wounds on Nirmala, scalding her with hot water and pressing an iron on her back and breasts.

Court Judge Akhear Tahir found former flight attendant Pek Ha guilty of three counts of abusing her maid.

Responding to Pek Ha's release, Indonesia's deputy ambassador for Malaysia Tatang B. Razak said he expected Pek Ha to proceed with an appeal in order to seek more lenient penalty for her crimes.

"That is why the embassy is continue to fight so that Nirmala can keep the justice that she already won. Her lawyers will file for a compensation for the torture," Razak said.

Embassy spokesperson Eka Suripto said that he was saddened by Nirmala's temporary release, but the decision was in line with the law. (and)

I believe the correct amount for the bail was MYR200,000 and not MYR200.
