Jazy Sports Beacon rider Sherwin Carrera of the Philippines came first in a neck-and-neck last gasp sprint in the 159.2 kilometer seventh stage of the Speedy Tour d'Indonesia from Madiun to Surabaya, both in East Java, on Sunday.
Carrera clocked three hours, 46 minutes and seven seconds, the same as five other riders: Suhardi Hassan and Wan Mohd Najmee Wan Mohammad, both from Malaysia, and home cyclists Projo Waseso and Toton Susanto. But a time bonus meant organizers eventually declared the Filipino the victor.
Projo Waseso, a rider from Kutai Kartanegara team, said the seventh stage required patience and stamina because most of the route was flat.
Projo said he should have been able to win the stage but his poor physical condition slowed him down during the race.
"I caught the flu," Projo said.
No Indonesian rider has managed to take the top step of the tour podium so far in the seven stages completed.
The first stage went to Russian rider Artemy Timofee and the second stage to Brad Hall of Australia. The next stages were taken by Hossain Jahanbanian of Iran, Masakazu Ito of Japan, Ghader Mizbani Iranagh of Iran and Dutchman Wim Spijkerboer, respectively.
Iranian riders from the Tabriz Petrochemical Cycling Team are dominating the tour with Ghader Mizbani Iranagh, Amir Zargari and Hossain Jahanbanian hovering around the top three in the overall standings.
The riders will compete in the eighth stage in Surabaya on Monday along an 80 kilometer route.
Harijanto, a technical director with Polygon Sweet Nice, one of the teams participating in the tour, said the home cyclists had little chance of outpacing the foreign cyclists in the eighth stage because of their lack of experience.
"The eighth stage features many sharp turns, which will be the main challenges for the home cyclists to overcome should they want to win this stage," Harijanto said.
Seven foreign teams and 10 local teams taking part in the Speedy Tour d'Indonesia, which traverses 1,793 kilometers in 12 stages from Jakarta to resort island Bali.
