Customs officials foiled a large-scale attempt to smuggle in 100 Blackberry wireless devices which originated in Hong Kong at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten on Tuesday.
"A courier service tried to smuggle in 100 cellular phones by failing to declare the nature of the goods being transported," a customs official told tempointeraktif.com.
He said two Jakarta residents J, 37, and R, 40, smuggled the illegal goods on a Singapore Airlines flight from Singapore.
Blackberries have been sold for between Rp 5 million and Rp 8 million in the local market.
The potential total value of the smuggled goods could reach as high as Rp 100 million.
Customs officials are working with the Jakarta Police to investigate the case. (amr)
