Global economic woes have caused local factories to either lay off or order 63,000 workers to stay at home, the manpower minister said Wednesday.

Manpower and Transmigration Minister Erman Suparno said the data was recorded as of Nov. 28; 16,000 employees have been laid off in November alone.

"We have also received letters informing us of plans to lay off 23,927 more workers," he said, as quoted by kompas.com.

The report mentions that Jakarta has suffered the highest numbers of layoffs, 14,268 people. Other provinces -- Central Java, Maluku and West Kalimantan -- have recorded 1,190, 515 and 496 people, respectively. (ewd)
