Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) has alleged that some lawmakers received kickbacks from the Religious Affairs Ministry.
ICW head of monitoring and public services, Ade Irawan, said in his report to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) that the alleged crime was linked to the ongoing pilgrimage. The
watchdog reported that several high-ranked officials at the ministry, as well as two members of the House of Representatives' Commission VIII overseeing religious affairs were involved.
Ade said the lawmakers were suspected of receiving incentives and transportation allowances stemming from a discussion about the 2006 haj pilgrimage travel payment (BPIH). He refused to give names.
In the report, ICW said the bribes were made through BPIH incentives worth Rp 495.4 million (US$41,280) and in transportation allowances totaling US$3,000.
Ade called on the KPK to immediately investigate the allegations at the ministry, and that the KPK had also received tipoffs from the public.
