Police exchange shots with thieves in Denpasar

Two men attempting to mug a bank customer managed to escape arrest after a gun fight with a police officer in Denpasar, Bali, on Friday at noon.
The officer chased the pair along Jl. Veteran before one of them drew a gun and fired several shots at him. The officer fired back but failed to stop the thieves who took off on a motorcycle.
The officer attempted to chase them, also on a motorcycle, but was unsuccessful.
An identified police officer told Antara state news agency that the two men had attempted to rob Made Adi Krisna who was carrying Rp 75 million from a bank in the city.
On his way home from the bank, Krisna noticed one of his car tires was flat, and he stopped on Jl. Veteran. While he was looking for help, the pair of thieves attempted to grab a bag containing the money, from Krisna's car.
Noticing the pair, Adi moved to stop them, but became involved in a violent struggle. The fight was spotted by a police officer patrolling the area on a motorcycle.
The two robbers immediately fled the scene firing shots at the officer.
Denpasar Police chief Sr. Comr. Gede Alit Widana confirmed the incident, adding that his office had deployed a special team to catch the perpetrators. (and)
