People in the Banten regency of Serang and Lampung will be lucky enough to witness an annular solar eclipse on Jan. 26, 2009, according to a forecast by the Jakarta observatory.
"The annular solar eclipse will not be visible from Jakarta, but will be in Serang and Lampung," agency member Cecep Nurwendana said Thursday. Nurwendana was attending a meeting to establish the date for the Islamic Day of Sacrifice.
During an annular solar eclipse, the sun appears as a very bright ring around the outline of the moon.
Up to five solar eclipses take place each year on earth.
The first solar eclipse for 2009 will be partially visible in the southern third of Africa, Madagascar, Australia (except Tasmania), southeast India and Southeast Asia. The second, a total eclipse, will occur on July 22 and will be seen from India, Nepal, China and the central Pacific Ocean.
