Speed kills most: Transportation Ministry

Traffic accidents involving speeding motorists constitute up to 90 percent of some 17,000 deaths on the road each year, says the Transportation Ministry's director general for land transportation, Soerojo Alimoeso.

"We need to control vehicles' speeds, and one way to do this is if drivers apply technology that can regulate their speeds to within a specific range," Soerojo told Antara news wire on Thursday.

Speed controls, he said, were an important way to make roads safer and more comfortable and would reduce the number of traffic accidents.

"We may not see any traffic accidents by 2015, because we will have the technology to control speeding and, with our public awareness campaigns, people will comply with traffic regulations," he said. (ewd)
