JAKARTA: Actress Marcella Zalianty was named a suspect by the Central Jakarta police on Friday in an assault case which also involves prominent Indonesian race-car driver Ananda Mikola.
Marcella is alleged to have asked some men, including Ananda, to kidnap and assault her employee, Agung Setiawan, for allegedly failing to pay off a debt.
"She has officially been named a suspect," Central Jakarta police chief Ike Edwin was quoted as saying by okezone.com on Friday.
If found guilty, the actress could serve a possible sentence of eight years in prison.
Marcella's lawyer, Minola Sebayang, denied Marcella was the mastermind of the attack, saying the artist did not give such orders.
"The victim can say anything, but everything must be proven," he said, adding the police should consider the fact that Agung had committed fraud against his client.
Marcella is now producing her own film Lastri with director Eros Djarot. Shooting for the film has been halted due to protests from people who accuse the film of supporting communism.
Her latest film, Under the Tree (directed by Garin Nugroho), will be premiered at JiFFest from Dec. 5-9. -- JP
