Dozens of adults and children were trampled as they struggled to get a share of Idul Adha sacrificial meat at the Surabaya District Court compound in Surabaya, East Java, on Monday, Antara news agency reported.

However, there were no fatalities from the incident as police and security guards were able to intervene, instructing crowds to get in line to get their share.

Thousands of local residents had thronged the area since Monday morning, but the meat distribution did not begin until past noon local time.

As the gates were opened, crowds stormed into the compound. Some elderly people and children fell in the rush and were trampled, suffering minor injuries.

The court office slaughtered six cows and nine goats for Idul Adha (the Islamic Day of Sacrifice) this year. The meat was distributed to around 1,000 residents of the area. (dre)
