Indonesia proposes an Asian democracy forum

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is set to launch Wednesday a democracy forum for the Asian region, dubbed Bali Democracy Forum, which has invited 33 countries to participate.

Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda said Tuesday the forum would not promote any single democratic system to the Asian countries which become involved.

"Instead we are hoping Asian countries can learn and share experience about democracy from one another," Hassan said, as quoted by Tempointeraktif.com.

The minister said the forum's initial target was to set an agreement for a democracy discussion on the regional level.

The Bali Democracy Forum will take place from Wednesday to Friday this week in Bali. The forum will be attended by head of states and governments, including Timor Leste's prime minister, Xanana Gusmao; Australia's prime minister, Kevin Rudd; and Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. (dre)
