Some 300 houses in the northern coastal village of Yawosi village in Papua were devastated on Wednesday by violent waves that reached three meters in height.
Local villagers said the rising seawater and violent waves had been striking the shoreline since Tuesday afternoon, forcing hundreds of people to evacuate for safer ground.
"Many houses were ruined by the violent waves. It happened all of a sudden," said one villager, Wabiser.
Another resident, Andreas Mambobo, pleaded with local government to take necessary measures to help with the evacuation and come up with a plan to relocate Yawosi residents left homeless. As of Wednesday noon, the violent waves were still persisting, kompas.com reported. (and)
