JAKARTA: MTV Indonesia has chosen rock band J-Rocks as the spokesband for this year’s MTV Staying Alive concert, the TV network’s initiative to encourage HIV prevention and fight stigma and discrimination against people living with the deadly virus.

The concert — which takes the theme “Play the Music...Sound the Message” —  will be held in Jakarta on Dec. 14. It will also feature popular bands such as Letto, Kerispatih, Samsons, RAN and the Changcuters.

“As a spokesband, we are trying to raise children’s awareness on AIDS,” the band’s drummer, Anton, was quoted as saying by detikhot.com.

The band’s song, “Meraih Mimpi” (To Reach a Dream), was picked as the theme song for their campaign. “We are hoping that people with HIV/AIDS will never give up,” Iman, the vocalist, said.

J-Rocks is the third band chosen to be MTV Staying Alive’s spokesband after punk band Superglad in 2006 and Nidji in 2007.

Formed in 2003, the band, which is heavily influenced by Japanese rock icon L’Arc~en~Ciel, has released two albums since 2005. — JP
