YOGYAKARTA: The Japanese Butoh dance will be performed at the Yogyakarta Cultural Park from Thursday until Wednesday by Japanese, Korean and Indonesian dancers gathering for the 2008 Asia Tri Jogja.

The performance is a cooperation between Asia Tri Jogja, Bank Art Studio, Liaison International Butoh Japan and the Agency of Cultural Affairs.

According to the organizing committee chairman, Bambang Paningron from Jaran Production, Butoh is a Japanese contemporary dance invented by two friends -- Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno -- which has since become a Japanese cultural icon.

A number of first-generation masters of Butoh will perform in Yogyakarta, including Saga Kobayashi, Keiin Yoshimura, Tomiko Takai, Ko Murobushi, Yukio Waguri and Yoshito Ohno, the only child of Kazuo Ohno.

These masters learned the dance directly from Ohno and Hijikata.

The masters are also scheduled to perform collaborative pieces with dancers from Yogyakarta and Surakarta, including Besar Widodo, Mugiyono Kasido, Jemek Supardi and Broto Wijayanto.

Bambang said it was a rare opportunity to see such a collaboration of dance masters perform Butoh outside of Japan. -- JP
