The deputy attorney general for state administrative affairs has claimed that the Attorney General's Office (AGO) rescued Rp 1 trillion (US$88.4 million) of state losses in 2008, up from Rp 900 billion last year.

Deputy AG Edwin Pamimpin Situmorang said Friday his office had collected the sums through winning several court cases and by collecting loan payments from state institutions.

He also said the AGO was set to form four special commissions to accelerate resolving disciplinary issues with its prosecutors and to repair its public image.

"We will form commissions to focus on AGO recruitment, ethics, performance and organization during our national meeting next week in Cipanas, West Java," he said.

He said the AGO recognized there had been some undisciplined prosecutors who had become implicated themselves in corruption cases.

His statement refers to the well-publicized case in which prosecutor Urip Tri Gunawan accepted bribes to cover-up malfeasance at the central bank.

"These commissions will be tasked with evaluating all regional and central prosecutors' offices, plus we expect to put some better policies in place to improve our efforts," he said.
