ICW asks AGO to clarify Rp 8 trillion savings claim

Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) has requested the Attorney General's Office (AGO) clarify its claim to have returned Rp 8 trillion (US$732 million) and US$18 million the state had lost in 3,143 corruption cases the AGO prosecuted between Jan. 2004 and Nov. 2008.

Febriansyah, speaking for ICW, said Friday such findings were different from the watchdog's own findings based on reports by the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) and the Central Financial Report (LKPP).

“From the two institutions' reports, we found the AGO had rescued only Rp 382.67 billion during that period, very far from its claim during the World Anti-Corruption Day commemoration on Tuesday,” he told journalists outside the AGO.

Moreover, he added, the AGO had yet to resolve a compensation issue over state losses of Rp 7.72 trillion unresolved since Dec. 2007.

“Thus, we have asked the AGO to explain its claim of having saved Rp 8 trillion, and we have set a 30-day deadline for the AGO to clarify this with us,” he said. (ewd)
