Jombang District Court in East Java released Maman "Sugik" Sugianto and threw out all charges against him Wednesday, after detaining him since May for his supposed part in the murder of a man named Asrori.
Presiding judge Kartijono told
kompas.com Wednesday the court had freed Sugik because the Supreme Court had overturned the conviction on appeal of Sugik's fellow suspects David Eko
Priyanto and Imam "Kemat" Khambali. Both David and Kemat attended Wednesday's hearing.
The Jombang Police had been holding Jombang residents David, Kemat and Sugik in custody since May over allegations they had murdered a man named Asrori, whose body had purportedly been
found at a sugar cane plantation in the district in September last year.
Serial killer Verry Idham "Ryan" Henyansyah later confessed to killing Asrori, saying he had buried the body in his parent's backyard in Jombang.
The claim was backed up by police DNA testing which confirmed the body found at the plantation was that of a man named Fauzin who had gone missing in September 2007. (ewd)
