Policeman allegedly commits suicide over wrongful shooting

A police officer died after shooting himself in the head at a gas station restroom in Pati, Central Java, on Tuesday evening.

An eyewitness said the man, known as Officer Suwarno, had died after two unnamed fellow officers failed to resuscitate him.

"I heard a gunshot from the restroom and saw two police officers who had been standing outside rush into the room," Rifa'i told Antara news agency Wednesday morning.

Suwarno and his colleagues were reported to have been on their way to the Pati Police station to explain the fatal shooting of a civilian at a music concert in Cluwak earlier in the day.

Antara reported Suwarno had accidentally shot the civilian while trying to break up a fight. (amr)
