Britain's media watchdog has fined the BBC for running unfair phone-in contests on two of its radio stations.
The BBC was ordered Thursday to pay 95,000 pounds ($147,000) after an investigation showed that listeners were invited to call in to enter contests on two prerecorded radio shows.
Listeners did not know they could not win or enter either contest because the shows were broadcast as though live. The shows were broadcast between December 2005 and December 2006.
Telecommunications regulator Ofcom said that while the breaches to Britain's Broadcasting Code were serious, the competitions weren't run for profit. The BBC says it has taken steps to prevent similar breaches in the future.
