YOGYAKARTA: In a bid to maximize income from taxation and give residents a good understanding about tax affairs, Gadjah Mada University (UGM), in cooperation with the Yogyakarta Directorate General's Tax Office, has set up a tax center in the university compound.

UGM rector Prof. Sudjarwadi and head of the Yogyakarta Directorate General's Tax Office Djangkung Sudjarwadi signed a memorandum of understanding in Graha Sabha Pramana hall on Wednesday.

"The tax center will function as a learning, research, training and tax awareness center in the university compound and for residents," said rector Sudjarwadi, adding that the program gave people a good opportunity to learn to be more aware about their taxation responsibilities.

Djangkung said he hoped the center would also be able to offer new and innovative recommendations for creating a better taxation system in Indonesia.

According to the office's data, the office has collected Rp 1.3 trillion (US$118 million) in income tax this year, short of its target of Rp 1.5 trillion. To meet the target, the office is promoting its campaign advising individuals and institutions of the importance of paying tax. --JP
