LOW BLOW: Harris Horatius of Indonesia demonstrates various moves in the nanquan event
Equipped with a spear adorned with a red horse-hair tassel, Indonesian teenager Natalie Chriselda whirls, runs, leaps and performs acrobatics in front of spectators inside a hotel ballroom-turned-playing hall in Bali.
This is qiangshu, a style of taolu, the wushu artistic discipline.
In other events, the wushu competitors execute routines incorporating jumps, flicks and aerial kicks, all fighting styles to be found in kung fu martial arts.
Athletes under 18 years old from 44 countries took part in the 2nd World Junior Wushu Championship held at Westin Hotel in Nusa Dua, Bali, from Dec. 9 to 13.
A total of 62 gold medals were on offer in the competition which featured two disciplines -- taolu (artistic) and sanshou (combative).
While the Chinese performers proved their invincibility in taolu, their sanshou compatriots missed two of the possible eight golds.
In the end, China retained the championship crown with a formidable collection of 16 gold and two silver medals. Indonesia took third place with six gold, eight silver and eight bronze medals, behind runner-up Japan on 8-5-5.
