YOGYAKARTA: Dozens of Gadjah Mada University students rallied in front of Graha Sabha Pramana hall Friday urging the rector not to implement the law on education entity and to develop UGM as the people's campus.

Students from several university departments protested at the commemoration of UGM's 59th anniversary. They were unable to meet with UGM Rector Sudjarwadi because he refused to see them.

The students reject the law, endorsed by the House of Representatives on Wednesday, as it means universities will be managed like companies.

"The law will allow education institutions to declare bankruptcy just like companies," said the chairman of UGM natural sciences faculty's student body.

The law requires education costs to be borne by students, increasing costs and close education access to the poor.

"We will keep rejecting the law and ask the rector to refuse it. UGM should return to the people's campus," Munadiyan said. -- JP
