Dozens of children sang and danced enthusiastically to songs praising Persija, the city's football club, on a small stage set up on the riverbank of Ciliwung River in Bukit Duri, South Jakarta.

Elsewhere, dozens of women were lining up to get free medical checkups, medicines and acupuncture from the doctors working in the tent, while other residents sold foods and drinks from makeshift stalls. Others chose to be spectators (photo) and enjoy the day.

Living under threat of eviction, the Free Ciliwung Studio and local residents held the community bazaar from Friday to Sunday along the narrow alley of Bukit Duri, South Jakarta.

"We've heard that the city plans to clear the dwellings along the riverbank, but with this event, we wanted to show the public and the government that there's no need for eviction because marginalized people living here have succeeded in managing the environment through their projects," said Catholic priest Sandyawan Sumardi, founder of the Free Ciliwung Studio.

The event was held to promote the Free Ciliwung Studio's environmental program, which includes waste management, clean water, nutrition improvement, health care and environmental education. --JP/fmb
