Hundreds of hectares of corn and rice fields have been destroyed by floodwaters in East and South Lampung Regencies, following heavy downpours over the past three days.

Rainwaters have broke the banks of the Way Sekampung and Way Gelam Rivers, which run through the regency.

Floods have inundated the main road connecting Candipura District in South Lampung with Jabung District in East Lampung.

Suhartini, a villager in Candipuro, told Tempointeraktif.com on Sunday that floods have ruined around 400 hectares of three-month-old rice shoots in the district.

"The shoots are definitely damaged after being submerged for three days and there is no sign of the water subsiding," she said.

Meanwhile, Asahan Village in East Lampung reported that floodwaters up to two meters high submerged 150 hectares of corn fields, 150 hectares of cassava fields and hundreds of hectares of palm oil plantations.

Kohar, chairman of the Asahan Village Representative Body, said Sunday that the floods were the worst the area has experienced in the last 20 years. (dre)
