Govt increases airport exit tax fee to Rp 2.5m

The government will increase passenger exit taxes for Indonesian residents traveling overseas by 150 percent for travel by airplane and 100 percent for sea travel,
kompas.com reported Wednesday.
Residents who do not have tax identity cards (NPWP) will now have to pay Rp 2.5 million (US$2083) -- up from Rp 1 million -- should they wish to travel by air. Those who intend to travel by sea will have to pay Rp 1 million, up from Rp 500,000.
The tax would be effective as of Jan. 1, 2009 and would last until 31 Dec. 2010, Tax Office spokesman Djoko Slamet Surjoputro said Wednesday.
The Tax Office will exempt citizens under 21 years of age, foreign nationals who have lived in Indonesia less than 183 days within 12 months, diplomatic officials and staff of international organizations. (ewd)
