Tangerang gets tough on graffiti, punk rock

TANGERANG: Tangerang Mayor Wahidin Halim ordered the municipality's Security and Order Agency to hunt down and arrest "students who do vandalism by scrawling" on public walls.

"If they get caught in the act, they must be apprehended and reported to the school. These students must be punished," he was quoted as saying by tempointeraktif.com on Tuesday.

Wahidin also said his administration would penalize street vendors and any residents who littered the streets. Reprimands and punishments were necessary for society to learn lessons, he said.

"(The administration) also has to implement an order on punk rock street musicians and street vendors at intersections," Wahidin said. -- JP
