PDIP opposes court's ruling

BANDUNG, West Java: The West Java branch of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) has filed an official protest against the Constitutional Court's ruling to revoke Article 214 of the 2008 law on appointing a legislative candidate based on the majority of votes.

PDIP Regional Executive Board chairman Rudy Harsa Tanaya said the decision could trigger internal rifts among the party's legislative candidates and undermine the number of votes during the 2009 election.

"This method is not to the advantage of qualified candidates because they would be sent to electoral areas which are not part of their constituency," he said.

The decision was made to increase the opportunities for skilled candidates to garner votes from constituencies outside their own.

"If the appointment by majority vote ruling is used, the winner could be a pop artist, because voters no longer consider the quality of a candidate, thus their chances of winning are very small," said Rudy. -- JP

Comment: Mr. Tanaya what kind of a democracy do you have in mind, people's choice or a democracy where the people function only to legitimize party's choices (which is actually a dictatorship, like the election in the CP Central Commitee during Soviet Russia's time). It is the responsibilities of the party management to consolidate the party after election.

Comment: Mr. Tanaya, do you regard the people as stupid? Your qualification might not agree with the people's, it does not matter, it's democracy. At one time the people of Amsterdam (Netherland) was fed-up with the attitude of the city's political elite, to spite them they elected a homeless drifter (gelandangan) as their representative to the city council. The drifter as city council member seem to be OK.
