Indonesia to implement Wimax broadband in 2009

Indonesia will implement Wimax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) broadband technology next year to improve access to the Internet across the country, an official said Sunday.

Engkos Koswara, an expert adviser to the state minister for research and technology, told Antara news agency the government was still testing the 2.3 GHz frequency for the Wimax technology.

"We hope that by next year, Wimax technology will be implemented," he said in Medan, North Sumatra, adding the government would encourage the use of domestic products to support the technology.

Indonesia ranks very low in the region in the use of broadband for Internet access.

Engkos was in Medan to attend the promotion of IGOS (Indonesia Goes Open Source) and the launching of IGOS for North Sumatra (IGOS Sumut).

IGOS, launched in 2004, was launched to promote the use of open source software throughout the country.

While other APAC countries have already started the WiMAX implementations, Indonesia would be a niche market to enable the mass community to explore the technology offerings breaking the digital divide through its cost effectiveness and also enable the governments to utilize the promising broadband technology to safeguard the nation by deploying the disaster management solutions towards unalert tsunami conditions.

The decision to implement WiMAX for broadband is a right decision for Indonesia due to its geographical terrain. WiMAX has clear advantages to bridge the gap in broadband usage. Indonesia will have the advantage of readily available user devices in the mobile Wimax product range. With Indonesia joining the bandwagon, the Asian continent will exhibit the largest usage of WiMAX technology in the world.

Indonesia may be lagging on Malaysia, but have a look at Europe. We can only dream of it as of yet ;-)

Indonesia is way behind on the curve. I live in Malaysia and they already implemented it last year. Instead of the government 'testing' to see whether it works or not they should have looked around and implemented it this year already. Of course it works! Wimax is a great way to develop internet in rural and less populated areas and should help the people of Indonesia open their eyes to the world. Even Intel is building the technology in its chipsets now.
