A bloody conflict between residents of two neighboring villages on Haruku Island, Central Maluku, has killed one person on Saturday, the police said Sunday.

The incident occurred when a boat carrying 11 people from Pelauw village was attacked by two speedboats manned by people from Kailolo village in waters off Hitapori Beach early Saturday morning.

The boat carrying the Pelauw villagers capsized, with all but one passenger making it back safely to the beach. The missing person, presumed dead, was identified as Ms. Asma Latupono.

Maluku Police chief Brig. Gen. Mudji Waluyo vowed the police would arrest the attackers and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law.

"We will enforce the law. We will also look for the victim by sending divers to the location," he said in Pelauw.

Haruku has been the scene of frequent sectarian clashes that have left scores of people dead.
