Mount Semeru of Lumajang regency in East Java is still considered on alert status despite increasing activity including spewed ashes, eruptions and tremors in the past 15 days, kompas.com  has reported.

On Monday alone, the 3,676-meter of mountain erupted and produced hot smoke five times. There have been 189 explosions and one tremor so far.

Falling ash continues to disrupt residents living across 15 districts out of the 21 in the regency.

Chair of the regency's health and social services agency Wisu Wasono Adi told kompas.com Monday his office was preparing masks for residents to protect themselves from inhaling the ash.

"Residents can pick up the masks at their nearby health centers and district offices free of charge," he said.

Head of the mountain observation center Suparno said heavy rain and cloud have accompanied the eruptions since Monday morning. (ewd)
