Limboto Lake has overflowed and submerged several villages in Gorontalo regency of North Sulawesi, forcing residents to evacuate, kompas.com reported Monday.

Floodwaters rose to between 50 centimeters and 1.5 meters to swamp homes in Dembe and Lekobalo villages, after heavy rains had pelted the area since Saturday.

Lekobalo resident Meri said Monday she and her family had to move in with a neighbor living on higher ground.

"We're expected the water level will keep rising and take a long time to recede as well," she said.

Meanwhile, residents in Tabumela and Tualango villages have contracted more diseases since flooding inundated their homes these past two months. Some said they were combating diarrhea and itching, which prevented them from taking their boats out to fish.

"Due to our diseases, we find it difficult to earn money. We hope the local administration will help us," said resident Abdul. (ewd)
