BOGOR: On Tuesday, West Java Governor Ahmad Heriawan officiated regent-elect Rahmat Yasin and his deputy Karyawan Faturachman.
The ceremony was attended by officials and hundreds of supporters, Tempointeraktif.com reported Tuesday.
Ahmad said his office would increase funding for education to 20 percent in the 2009 Bogor budget. The provincial administration has set aside some Rp 640 billion in its budget to provide free tuition to elementary and junior high school students.
The governor also promised to provide free textbooks for students as of next year.
"Expensive textbooks have prevented students from studying properly, so we will provide them with free books," he said.
The Human Development Index in Bogor regency was 70.08 in 2007, slightly below the West Java average of 70.71, he said.
"The ideal figure for a prosperous, educated and healthy community is 80." -- JP
