Nusa Tenggara children facing rough times

West Nusa Tenggara administration on Friday announced that the health and education of the region's children had been adversely affected by the increasing divorce rate there, tempointeraktif.com reports.

According to data from the Provincial Religious Court, between January and November 2008 there was a total of 2,901 divorce cases, which is a 30 percent increase from the same period in 2007.

The court's deputy chairman, Mustamiuddin Ibrahim, said the main reason behind the divorces was a low standard of living in the region which had prompted many men to try their luck abroad, especially to Malaysia, Saudi Arabia or Brunei Darussalam.

"Some men have just abandoned their families. This is both because of economic hardships and morality problems," Ibrahim said while adding that an increasing divorce rate came hand in hand with economic pressures.

The high divorce rate had severely impacted the quality of life of children in the region, since their access to healthy living and education had been hampered, he said.

"The high divorce rate has affected the region's human development index," Ibrahim added, without giving details. (and)

In light of your article on the Nusa Tenggara children, I would like to bring to your attention my picture book now out by Penguin called "Standing on My Own Two Feet: A Child's Affirmation of Love in The Midst of Divorce" Following is a brief description and web site address, which is not only more colorful, but includes my back story, a peek inside the book, the Kirkus and SLJ reviews, Newspaper articles, and my "Six Golden Rules to Help Children Through Divorce".

My hope is to help as many children as possible during this trying time, and give them a lifetime of high self-esteem!

Sincerely,

"Standing on My Own Two Feet" is the story of Addison, a little boy who is absolutely sure of his parents' love for him...even though they are divorced. Each positive page is filled with simple and moving affirmations of his love and strength. This beautifully illustrated picture book is inspiring for both children and parents alike, and assures kids that they will always have their Mom and Dad to lean on, just as they have two strong feet to stand on.
Children will do best if they know that their mother and father will still be their parents even though the marriage has ended. They need to know it is not their fault, and, that their Mom and Dad's love is unconditional.
"Standing on My Own Two Feet" simply says just that.

Nobody abandoned their families, it just happened they were busy rallying in the street for the sake of the Palestinians.
