JAKARTA: The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Relief Body in Bandung announced Sunday that Mount Dempo in Pagar Alam, South Sumatra, had been raised to alert status following increased seismic activity.

"There has been a phreatic explosion recorded," said Surono, head of the institution, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com news portal.

Phreatic eruptions are ejections of steam typically caused by magma coming into contact with cold water deep beneath the earth's surface.

Surono said the eruption had occurred on Jan. 1, at 10:51 a.m. The explosion, which sent steam, mud and ash into the air, caused hikers to abandon their belongings and flee. Ash rained down as far as 10 kilometers from the mountain.

Dempo is a stratovolcano that stands 3,159 meters above sea level. There are seven craters at the summit. A 400-meter-wide lake at the northwest end of the crater complex holds around 80 million cubic meters of water. --JP
